Gearbox Pressure X 8E
Feels like a control paddle to me. Plays like a power paddle to them. The Gearbox Pressure X 8E is the first paddle I've played that hits extremely hard without feeling like I hit it extremely hard. I hit one ball with it and did a double take.

Volair CMD HYB 16mm
Everybody was glazing this paddle and I didn't see it. Then I added five grams of tape. "This is okay." That was my entire first session with the Volair CMD. A little soft, a little light, fine, maybe not my favorite.

I'd never put it in my bag, but it's the one I'd hand a student. "I hate this paddle." That was hour one. Too soft, no pop, like someone handed me a Gen 1 paddle and told me it was 2026. I got through one game, barely, and put it back in the bag.

A very good power paddle with one problem: its twin is the 8E. The Gearbox Pressure X 8M was the first of the two Pressure X paddles I picked up, and it was fun from the first swing. It hits hard, it's relatively firm, and it has good pop and good power.

Every paddle on this list earned real hours in my hands, drilling, rec play, and matches, often back to back against the paddles it beat. Labels matter more than ranks: the best power paddle is the wrong paddle for a control player. When a paddle isn't worth your money, I say that too, and it stays on the page.
